Catalan word stress and accent marks: an audible system
Predict Catalan stress, distinguish acute and grave accents and understand when written marks signal vowel quality as well as stress.
Catalan spelling predicts default stress from the final letters; an accent marks words that depart from that pattern and can also identify open or closed vowel quality.
Predict the default stress
Words ending in a vowel, vowel plus s, or common endings such as -en and -in often stress the penultimate syllable; many other endings stress the final syllable. Use a current normative reference for the exact rule and exceptions.
Read acute and grave accents
Catalan uses acute accents such as é, í, ó, ú and grave accents such as à, è, ò. On e and o, the mark can encode open-versus-closed quality: é/è and ó/ò. Dialect influences how these contrasts are realised.
Train spelling and sound together
Mark syllables, predict stress before looking at the accent, then listen to a trusted recording. Dictate short pairs and retain each new word with its stressed vowel rather than treating the mark as silent typography.
Questions learners ask
Frequently asked questions
Does every stressed vowel take an accent?
No. Only words that meet the orthographic conditions require a written accent.
Are open and closed vowels identical everywhere?
No. Their distribution and realisation vary across Catalan varieties.
Why do some one-syllable words carry accents?
Diacritical accents distinguish a limited normative set of otherwise identical spellings.
