How to learn Catalan: a sustainable 12-week study plan
Create a twelve-week Catalan routine combining pronunciation, structured grammar, retrieval, media, conversation and regional awareness.
A durable Catalan plan combines one coherent course with frequent listening, active retrieval and real interaction. Choose a production model, but learn to treat regional variation as knowledge rather than error.
Weeks 1–4: build a usable base
Learn greetings, sound–spelling links, present-tense essentials, questions, articles and high-frequency phrases. Listen to one consistent variety while labelling it explicitly. Retrieve earlier material at the start of every session.
Weeks 5–8: connect daily situations
Add past narration, weak pronouns, numbers and local services. Alternate short intensive listening with easier extensive input. Record a prepared message twice weekly and improve the second version after feedback.
Weeks 9–12: enter the language community
Follow a regular Catalan programme, schedule weekly conversation and choose one setting where you initiate in Catalan. Repeat an early comprehension and speaking task at week twelve, then set the next cycle from observed gaps.
Questions learners ask
Frequently asked questions
Should Spanish speakers skip beginner Catalan?
No. They may progress quickly, but pronunciation, pronouns and false equivalences need explicit attention.
Which Catalan variety should I study?
Choose the standard most relevant to your location or goal, then widen comprehension deliberately.
Can free resources be enough?
They can support substantial progress, but structure, feedback and sustained interaction remain essential.
